THE GAP: 18 Steps through (dance) history PART II

Liza Penkova (SE)

Performance
Duration: 60 min

Dear East, everything is different here in the West.

In church, the priest makes jokes, and it all feels like last day of school…

you don't need to kneel, nor stand still, you may run, you may even dance.

Drawing on Penkova’s own experience of encountering Western culture as a teenager and later contemporary dance, she attempts to make visible a feeling of constant delay. A kind of temporal gap which she needed to fill, in order to catch up with the timelines of contemporary Western aesthetics.  Alternating between silence, music, soundtracks with voices from dance icons and her own reflections on norms and values between East and West, the audience is drawn into an hour long dance-solo with elements of melodrama and humour.

LIZA PENKOVA

Liza Penkova is a dance artist based in Gothenburg. With a focus on valorization and translation processes across time and culture, in her work, she often relies on historical archives as an important source of inspiration. With movement and choreography as her foundation, she skillfully weaves together various genres of performing traditions and physical cultures, creating a unique and captivating artistic experience.

In parallel with her professional activities, Liza is studying for a Master of Arts in Dance Education (M.A.D.E) at Stockholm University of the Arts. She is currently engaged in a choreographic research project entitled ’18 Steps Through (Dance) History’. This project explores the development of contemporary dance through history and culture by blending academic inquiry with artistic research.

Previously a dancer, educated at The Royal Swedish Ballet school and P.A.R.T.S. she has had the privilege of working with esteemed institutions such as the Gothenburg Opera Ballet (SE), Rosas dance company (BE), and Compagnie Michele Noiret (BE). Liza has also collaborated with freelance choreographers including Helena Franzén (SE), Georgia Vardarou (GR), and Veli Lehtovaara (FI) and others, contributing to a diverse range of artistic projects.

Already during her time as a dancer, Liza took time to develop her own choreographic voice. Together with other artists she founded The House of Bertha (BE/SE), PhD in One Night (BE) and The Silent Song (BE/SE), which have allowed her to explore her artistic vision and challenge creative boundaries.
