The expression “troca o passo” (literally “change the step/pace”) is used to refer to the second part of a date without a specific year (…the 1600s and “change the step”). The expression can also be used literally to mean changing foot, in order to align or misalign your step with someone else’s.
After Trolaró, Troca o Passo is the second duet that Ana Rita Teodoro and João dos Santos Martins develop as a pretext to research and reinvent themselves as artist-dancers detached from the idea of a specific project.
Walking is the present trace of a story that has already begun, the unfolding and fading of a form in progress. Is it possible to move forward while maintaining a relationship with the black holes of history? The elliptical curves of the world pull us into archaeological records. We advance and retreat, we align our steps and fall behind, we run and we are ahead, we stop but we continue moving.
A duet walking with butoh.

About the artist
PARASITA is the name of the nonprofit Association created in 2014, founded in the municipality of Santarém, the activity of which translates into the production and realization of artistic objects and cultural events where experimentation and critical discourse are privileged through research proposals where processes and products interact without distinction. In 2023, with the opening of Espaço Parasita, in Parque das Nações, it has changed its headquarters to Lisbon.
Today, PARASITA works as an association of artists who share resources and objectives to meet the characteristics of a professional environment in which dance is becoming more and more a fluid support — crossed by practical and theoretical studies, expanded practices, and discussions about boundaries between doing and curating —, to problematize the cultural responsibility of artists and related agents. Designed as an artistic structure, made by artists and for artists, PARASITA is currently composed by Ana Rita Teodoro, João dos Santos Martins and Ritó Natálio.
PARASITA is funded by the Republic of Portugal – Ministry of Culture / General-Directorate for the Arts and is a member of REDE – Association of Structures for Contemporary Dance, since 2019. PARASITA rejects any act of discrimination based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, social class, disability, or neurodiversity.
João Dos Santos Martins is a Lisbon-based artist exploring choreography, curatorship, editing, and research through collaborative projects.
Ana Rita Teodoro is an interdisciplinary artist whose work centers on “delirious anatomy,” challenging conventional body functions. She studied butoh dance and collects traditional Portuguese songs sung in the feminine for her artistic projects.
