The Portuguese expression “troca o passo” (literally, “change the step/pace”) is used to refer to the latter part of a date without a specific year (e.g., 1600s and “troca o passo”). It can also be used to change one's footing—either to align with or to fall out of sync with someone else's step.

Following Trolaró, Troca o Passo is the second duet developed by Ana Rita Teodoro and João dos Santos Martins, serving as a pretext to explore and reinvent themselves as dancers, free from the constraints of a project.

Walking is the present trace of a story that has already begun, the unfolding and fading of a form in progress. Is it possible to move forward while maintaining a connection to the black holes of history? The world’s elliptical curves pull us toward archaeological traces. We advance and retreat, align and fall out of step, run ahead and lag behind—we stop, yet still continue moving.

A duet walking with butoh.

About the artist

Ana Rita Teodoro is an interdisciplinary artist whose work centers on “delirious anatomy,” challenging conventional body functions. She studied butoh dance and collects traditional Portuguese songs sung in the feminine for her artistic projects. Deeply influenced by Butoh, she has studied with artists such as Yoshito Ohno, Min Tanaka, and Akira Kasai, and developed a long-term research into Tatsumi Hijikata’s work. She holds a Master’s degree in Dance from CNDC Angers and Paris 8, where she initiated the project Collection Delirious Anatomy, a series of solos dedicated to specific body parts. Her creations include MelTe (2009), Assombro (2015), FoFo (2019), and Your Teacher, please (2018). Ana Rita was associate artist at CN D Pantin (2017–2019) and is a founding member of Parasita. She collaborates regularly with Julien Desprez, João dos Santos Martins, and Adelaïde Feriot. Her work has been shown across Europe and in Taiwan.

João dos Santos Martins is an artist whose work encompasses dance, exploring formats such as choreography, exhibition, and publishing. His practice articulates collaborative ways of working that focus on issues of transmission, language and labor. Together with Ana Bigotte Vieira, they created a platform for mapping genealogies of dance history in Portugal (For there to be a Timeline). He founded a biannual journal — Coreia — dedicated to artists' writings in 2019. João performed in works by Moriah Evans, Ana Rita Teodoro, Xavier Le Roy, Eszter Salamon, Boris Charmatz, Marcelo Evelin, Jérôme Bel, Rui Horta, among others. Occasionally he writes and curates.
